Job Interview Success: How to Make a Great First Impression

Job Interview Success: How to Make a Great First Impression

A job interview provides a golden opportunity to show a potential employer who you are and what you have to offer. If you make a great first impression, you can put yourself in a position to enjoy a successful interview. Best of all, you could move closer to landing your dream job.

Tips to Make a Great First Impression

You only get one chance to make a great first impression during an interview, so you need to put your best foot forward from the get-go. Here are four tips to help you make a great first impression.

1. Prepare for Your Interview

Conduct research before your interview. Learn about the company and its culture. Also, review the job description.

It can be beneficial to conduct a mock interview with a family member or friend, too. This interview gives you a chance to consider how you’ll respond to questions your interviewer may ask. It can also help you build confidence in the days leading up to your interview.

2. Arrive Early or on Schedule

Give yourself sufficient time to arrive for your interview. For a virtual interview, try to log in to the meeting at least a few minutes early. This gives you extra time to adjust your camera and microphone before your interview gets underway. For an in-person interview, determine how long it will take you to reach the interview location.

It is always better to err on the side of caution, particularly when it comes to your interview arrival time. When in doubt, arrive for your interview early.

3. Wear Professional Attire

Brush your teeth, comb your hair, and dress professionally for your job interview. Avoid clothing and accessories that can be distracting.

Wearing professional attire eliminates the risk that an interviewer can focus exclusively on your qualifications rather than your appearance. Plus, it can help you look and feel your best during your interview.

4. Offer a Friendly Greeting

Greet your interviewer with a smile and a friendly hello. And, make eye contact with your interviewer and thank him or her for agreeing to meet with you.

A warm greeting can go a long way toward helping you start your interview on the right foot. If your interviewer senses you are enthusiastic about the meeting, he or she may feel the same. The result: you and your interviewer can learn from one another and determine if you are the right fit for a particular role.
