National Safety Month: 5 Tips to Contribute to a Safe Workplace

June marks National Safety Month, an annual National Safety Council campaign designed to improve safety at workplaces across the United States. Of course, workplace safety is more than a month-long initiative. In fact, those who prioritize on-the-job safety during National Safety Month and beyond are well-equipped to avoid workplace accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

How to Contribute to a Safe Workplace

Here are five tips you can use to contribute to a safe workplace today, tomorrow, and long into the future.

1. Eliminate Distractions

Give your full attention to the task at hand. If necessary, turn off your phone and any other electronics that can otherwise distract you. Also, if you feel your focus starting to wane, take a short break. That way, you can grab a snack or beverage, recharge your body and mind, and return to work feeling ready to tackle any challenges that come your way.

2. Watch for Workplace Hazards

Keep an eye out for slick floors, debris, or any other workplace hazards. If you find any workplace dangers, report them to your manager immediately. Because, the longer a workplace hazard goes unaddressed, the more likely it becomes that it can lead to an accident.

3. Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Wear safety glasses, gloves, or other PPE as needed. An employer must provide appropriate safety equipment to workers who are exposed to on-the-job hazards. Meanwhile, you should evaluate the condition of PPE before you use it at work. If the equipment appears worn down or defective, notify your manager. In this instance, your employer will need to provide replacement equipment that protects you against workplace hazards.

4. Maintain Workplace Equipment

Verify that workplace equipment is performing as expected. To do so, you can conduct regular equipment inspections. You can track the results of inspections across workplace machinery. Furthermore, you can develop equipment repair and maintenance schedules based on your inspection results. These schedules can help you stay on track with ongoing equipment repairs and maintenance.

5. Complete Workplace Safety Training

Take advantage of workplace safety training whenever it is offered. Employers typically offer workplace safety training at different times during the year. You can even encourage your employer to conduct frequent on-the-job safety training sessions.

The Bottom Line on Workplace Safety

National Safety Month provides a golden opportunity to contribute to a safe work environment. Yet, there are many things that workers can do every day to promote on-the-job safety.

Businesses and their employees can work together to minimize the risk of workplace accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Together, both parties can make workplaces safe now and in the future.
